Your company went to five days. Here’s what the extra days cost.

Moving from three office days to five adds two round trips each working week. Your added commute cost is the five-day estimate minus what you already spend under your current schedule. In the fictional driving example below, that change adds $1,804.80 a year, averaging $150.40 a month, including a maintenance and wear allowance. It also adds 128 hours of travel.

What changes when you go from hybrid to five days?

Count the office days you are adding. Someone moving from four days to five faces a different change from someone moving from two days to five, even if both drive the same route.

The calculator multiplies office days per week by working weeks per year. Using 48 working weeks as a fictional assumption:

Replace 48 with a working-year assumption that reflects your schedule. Account for time away from commuting, and use the same period for both estimates.

A full-year comparison describes the ongoing effect of the policy. If the mandate starts partway through the year, it does not describe only the months remaining. Keep those two budgeting questions separate.

How to calculate the added commute cost

Use one-way distance and one-way travel time. The engine doubles both for each office day. Parking should cover the office day; tolls should cover the round trip. Those dollar inputs are not doubled.

Enter your vehicle’s fuel economy, the gasoline price you want to model and a maintenance and wear allowance per mile. Use your own receipts and vehicle information where available. The example gasoline price below is an assumption, not a current US national average.

The section labeled “Compared with five office days” expresses the difference as savings under your selected schedule. When your employer removes those hybrid days, the same difference becomes the added modeled cost and travel time.

The calculator’s definition matters here: direct cost includes fuel, parking, tolls and a maintenance and wear allowance, less applicable driving reimbursement. Wear represents an allowance for vehicle use; it is not a bill paid after each commute.

For monthly planning, divide the annual difference by 12. That produces an annualized monthly average. A particular month’s spending can differ because its commuting days differ.

Old schedule, new schedule and the difference

Subtract the old result from the new result: $4,512.00 − $2,707.20 = $1,804.80 a year.

The full five-day cost is $4,512.00. Charging that entire amount to the mandate would include spending already present under the three-day schedule.

Of the added amount, $1,420.80 comes from modeled fuel, parking and tolls. The remaining $384.00 is the maintenance and wear allowance. Keeping those components visible gives you a clearer spending budget.

The calculation logic you can inspect

Office days equal weekly office days multiplied by working weeks. Miles equal one-way distance multiplied by two and by office days. Fuel equals miles divided by MPG, multiplied by gasoline price.

Parking and tolls equal their daily inputs multiplied by office days. Wear equals miles multiplied by the per-mile allowance. Direct cost adds those expenses and subtracts the applied reimbursement.

Compare my office schedules

The time cost belongs beside the money

In this example, the engine doubles the 40-minute one-way trip and applies it to each schedule’s office days. Annual commuting rises from 192 hours to 320 hours, adding 128 hours.

That is equivalent to sixteen eight-hour days: 128 ÷ 8 = 16. This is a time-equivalence illustration. It does not represent paid workdays or lost wages.

The calculator allows a personal hourly time value, but this example sets it to zero. Travel hours remain visible without assigning them a dollar price.

Use a travel-time input that reflects the journey you expect to make. If the additional office days involve a different route or materially different travel times, the shared-route table will not capture those differences automatically.

Your previous schedule changes the answer

These are variations of one fictional route. They are not a range of expected costs for US workers.

Parking deserves particular attention in this example: its added annual cost exceeds the added fuel cost. Check your actual parking arrangement before using a daily figure. An unchanged monthly permit does not create an additional parking charge merely because you use it more often.

Employer reimbursement also needs care. The calculator holds the entered annual driving reimbursement constant across schedules and caps the amount applied at modeled driving costs. If your employer changes the reimbursement with the mandate, calculate separate scenarios using the applicable amount for each.

Transit needs a separate fare check

The optional transit comparison multiplies the entered monthly fare by 12. Changing office days changes modeled transit travel time, but it does not change that annual fare automatically. Transit reimbursement is excluded.

If you already buy the same pass throughout the year and its price stays unchanged, extra office days add no pass-purchase expense. If you pay per ride, buy passes seasonally or change ticket products, establish the actual fare under each schedule separately.

The driving schedule table should not be read as a transit-fare comparison.

What this estimate does not include

The commute model excludes fixed insurance, financing, depreciation and tax consequences. It also excludes meals, coffee, childcare, pet care, clothing and home-office expenses. Review those separately when they change.

For broader office-day spending, count the difference between arrangements. If you buy lunch near the office, compare it with what you would otherwise spend on that meal. Assigning the entire office purchase to the mandate can overstate the change.

Do not substitute an IRS business mileage rate for your personal commute expense. The IRS publishes rates for specified tax purposes; they do not measure your route’s actual costs.

With unchanged take-home pay, additional spending leaves less money available elsewhere in your budget. That alone does not establish that your salary was reduced. If compensation is changing too, use the separate guide to weigh a salary increase against commuting costs.

Before discussing the mandate with your employer, bring the old schedule, the new schedule and their difference. Keep travel hours on a separate line. Ask about the expense your calculation identifies, such as parking assistance, rather than relying on a generic return-to-office cost estimate.
